5 Must Have Extensions for Joomla! Administrators

http://blog.themeforest.net/joomla/5-must-have-extensions-for-joomla-administrators/

Must Have Extensions for Joomla! Administrators

If you’re a Joomla! user you have no doubt seen their huge library of Extensions that let you add various bits of functionality to your favorite CMS. Below you’ll find a list of 5 of the best extensions for Joomla! Administrators.

1) File Management : JoomlaXplorer

This is so far the best and most stable files management extension for Joomla!. You can use it to create new files or folders, move, delete, rename, change permissions, upload files like you’re using FTP program. Even better you can archive and unpack files. Save time instead of uploading many files just upload one zip and use this extension to unpack.

One of the tricks I find very handy is how you can create a .htaccess file when you don’t have FTP details. .htaccess is required to enable Joomla!’s SEF URLs. A default Joomla! installation provides you with a file named htaccess.txt and tells you to rename it to .htaccess if you want to enable SEF URLs. If you tried to edit or rename the file, the extension refuse and gives a permission denied error. You can still create the file by creating it on your local machine, archive it , upload the archive to the root and unpack it using JoomlaXplorer! This trick can save you a lot of time you.

With JoomlaXplorer, you can edit the files with the username and groupname "nobody". These files are a source of headache for most users cause you cannot read or edit it using your FTP. If you want to know more about Joomla permissions, I suggest you check Joomla! Permissions Overview.

Version 1.6.3 comes with a cool Syntax Highlighter mode which works fine on IE and FF but not Opera.

Joomla!Xplorer is compatible with Joomla 1.0.x and 1.5 Legacy mode.

Get Joomla!Xplorer

2) Database Management : EasySQL

EasySQL

An essential tool for every database administrator. EasySQL let you execute any MySQL queries from your Joomla’s backend. The component comes with a group of commands for newbies so even if you’re not familiar with SQL syntax you will be able to use it.

Executing a SELECT statement will return the rows on the selected table and give you the ability to edit or delete the rows easily. You can also insert a new record into any table through a user friendly form. EasySQL feature the ability to export a table to CSV format. It is a must-to-have for any administrator doesn’t have access to tools like phpmyadmin.

EasySQL is compatible with Joomla 1.0.x and 1.5 Legacy mode.

Get EasySQL

3) Database Backup : eBackup

eBackup

eBackup is the only extension which have the ability to restore your backup instantly through Joomla’s backend. Unlike all other extensions which require using a tool running outside Joomla! as phpmyadmin. You can also use eBackup to check, optimize and repaire your database.

eBackup feature an automatic backup scheduler. Set it to create weekly backups -or whatever you want- and it will do all the job! You can also choose to email the backup to a certain address or upload it via FTP. Backup options like (drop, if exists, auto_inc, full inserts) and comressing as gzip. You don’t have to worry if the database is huge, you can specify the maximum execution time for the script to ensure the backup is created correctly

This extension was originally developed for mambo and modified to work with Joomla!. It is not listed on Joomla’s extension website propably for this reason. It is truely a hidden gem and an essential tool for every Joomla! administrator. You can download this extension through the developer’s website.

Get eBackup

4) Cloning : JoomlaPack

JoomlaPack

Please welcome the latest JED Editors Pick extension, JoomlaPack! It creates a full backup of your site in a ZIP archive. This file contains all your files, the database and an installer that looks similar to Joomla’s installer. You can use JoomlaPack to :

  • Clone your website on another server.
  • Create a full backup of your website.
  • Create a custom Joomla! installer loaded with all your frequently used extensions.

You can select to backup the whole site or just the database. Never worry about the server timeouts, the extension is AJAX Powered! You can exclude specific folders or database tables from your backup too!

You can also use JoomlaPack to save your time. You can create your Joomla! website on your local machine and move it online when you’re done to save time and bandwidth.

Although this extension is really amazing on backing up your site, It lacks a very important feature. The ability to restore your files. I’ll tell you a trick I always used to restore my files… Use the extension to backup your site and save the ZIP archive to the root. Whenever you need to restore your files unzinp it with JoomlaXplorer in a second! Don’t forget to delete the (install) folder after unpacking.

JoomlaPack is compatible with Joomla 1.0.x and 1.5 Native.

5) Content Management : Mass Content

Mass Content

This is an essential component for everyone starting a website with Joomla! Saves time by creating content items, categories or section faster and creating menu items for these contents too. With this extension you can :

  • Create up to 10 articles on one page with control over :
    1. Meta Description and Meta Keywords.
    2. Access level ( public, registered and special ).
    3. Creation date.
  • Create up to 10 sections and categories on one page.
  • Delete articles, categories and sections.

I used this extension to move a static website with 750+ article to Joomla! in 3 days! Its essential for every Joomla! installation.

Jumi - In Use (writing your own apps)

Writing your own applications via Jumi

With Jumi you can develop your own modules and plugins very quickly and easily. See how to do that.

You should have some basic knowledge of HTML, PHP and JavaScript. Many smart solutions are available on Internet for free. That means it is frequently sufficient to find what you need and just implement it into to Joomla! environment.

For the beginning I greatly recommend you to study demos and code snippets that are downloadable from this site at the least.

After you have finished tests of your custom code you are recommended to add several lines at the very beginning of your code

NEVER forget to start your Joomla! php code with following lines! Never! They are very important for security reasons!

defined('_JEXEC') OR defined('_VALID_MOS') OR die( "Direct Access Is Not Allowed" ); ?>

They prevent opening the php code directly bypassing the Joomla! environment.

The "security" lines introduced above work in both Joomla! 1.0.x and 1.5.x.

After you had developed your script application you have to upload it to your site. Then you can just include it into your Jumi module (published in any position) or Jumi plugin (in the content).

Really, it's easy.

Your environment: Joomla! and PHP

Do not forget that your scripts are "living" in Joomla! and PHP environment. So you have full access to global and superglobal variables and Joomla objects and methods.

I greatly recommend using Joomla! API whenever possible. It can save you a great deal of work!

Googlemaps Joomla Plugin

Plugin Googlemap - A Joomla plugin

This plugin is version 2.12o of the google map mambot for Joomla 1.0x or Joomla 1.5+ native.

Install

Just go to Joomla menu Extensions submenu Install/Uninstall (1.5) or Installers submenu Mambots (1.0.x) in your administration console. Upload and install the plugin.
Then go to Joomla menu Extension submenu Plugin Manager and publish the Plugin Google Maps (1.5) or menu Mambots submenu site Mambots (1.0.x). Then go to Joomla menu Extension submenu Plugin Manager and publish the Plugin Google Maps.

After publishing the plugin go to the parameters of the plugin by clicking on the name of the plugin. Here you can set the defaults of the parameters and most important the Google API key (Click here to have a key)

For Joomla 1.5 publish the plugin always. With the extra plugin parameter Published you can set if the mostag must be removed or that the mostag is replace with the Googlemap.

How to use the plugin in content

You can put the {mosmap} with parameters anywhere in content in Joomla: intro text or main text. You can see examples and documentation on my demo site: tech.reumer.net.

Check the html of the content item so there are no
or between { } or in the html a return.
The plugin works for one line! It can be once, twice or more to display multiple, inline maps on a single content page for different locations and configurations.

Usage: {mosmap width='500'|height='400'|lat='52.052312'|lon='4.447141'|
zoom='3'|zoomType='Large'|zoomNew='0'|mapType='Satellite'|showMaptype='1'|
overview='0'|text='sv DWO'|tooltip='DWO'|marker='1'|
align='center'}
(remove the returns between the line or
so its one line

You can change any of the parameters:

width, height to whatever you want although if its too small, you won't see very much.

lon and lat for the coordinates and/or address to search for the coordinates (use standard of your country)

zoom can be anything as specified in the Google Maps API.

zoomType, can be Small or Large, this controls the type of zoom function displayed or None so there is no zoomcontrol.

zoomNew, can be 1 for continues zoom and doubleclick and zoom or 0 for click to center (default 0)

zoomWheel, can be 1 for mousewheel zoom and 0 for no mousewheel zoom (default 0)

mapType can be Normal (default), Satellite, Hybrid, Terrain or Earth.

showMaptype is 0 for no Maptype controls and 1 shows Maptype controls (default 1)

Overview is 0 for no overview window in bottom right corner and 1 shows the overview and 2 for overview enabled but close initially (default 0)

text is for the marker, that will show on the map with a balloon. If you don't want to see the text, just set text=" and it will not display, the text is the data displayed above the location pin. Usually it would be used to display an address or hyperlink. A hyperlink is possible use the format: linkName. Don't use (double) quotes!

marker is for opening the infowindow (1 default) or close the infowindow (0) initially.

dir for adding get directions form for a route at maps.google.com to the coordinates.

tooltip is for the marker to have a tooltip when the mouse is on the marker (don't use HTML)

icon is the url to a icon for the marker so it can be different then default of Google

address is for a address to search for the coordinates

gotoaddr is for a searchfield and button so the user can search a address on the map (default 0)

kml is for a url to a kmlfile to load as a overlay on the map for multiple markers or a route

traffic is for showing traffic on the map (Only USA currently)

align is for placement of the map in the content (left, right, center or none)

lightbox is for placing a link/button to show a lightbox of the map (default 0)

show is for making the map displayed (default 1) or not. With lightbox on then the map only appears in lightbox.

You can set the key in the mosmap tag (optional) or Multiple urls and keys at the parameters by the plugin in the administrator of Joomla. You can register for a Google Maps Key here.

How Joomla pieces work together (components, modules, and plugins)

http://docs.joomla.org/How_Joomla_pieces_work_together

talks about Object oriented programming to make components and the stuff that makes things happen in Joomla...

How Joomla pieces work together

Some weeks ago I was asked to confirm if a custom PHP web development with a high budget was the right path to follow. After having a look at the goals of the project I thought that the custom path was overkill and told him that I believed that any open source CMS customization could deliver the same for lot less money. Having made a selection a year or so before I recommended Joomla! as the right tool for the job expecting that my paper will end at this point. But I finally got involved.

The only weak point of Joomla! at the time I made my selection (version 1.x) was that is was slow because of the huge joomla.php library file but I thought when making my recommendation that the new hardware we have now would compensate.

But to my surprise the Joomla! 1.5.2 framework had just been released and a first look at it was promising. The problem was that there is very little, if any information at all about how the pieces that Joomla! connect with each other. After developing a component, a module and a plugin to achieve the goals of the project, I had to look at lots of disparate small documents, source code and tantra to learn how these pieces work together to make the new Joomla! 1.5. It's a fabulous environment to develop web solutions in an easy and powerful way. My congratulations to the development group that has been able to envision such a magnificent tool.

This document is my attempt to express to the community what I have learned while developing the project and also learn from the feedback and help from others. Because I am quite sure that there are lots of things that need revision I humbly request the help of the Joomla! gurus out there to take the time to read this somehow long dissertation and feed me with their knowledge. And, not less important, I request your tolerance if my English is not Oxford-like because I am not a native English speaking person. Luckily, this is a wiki, and others have come by to help with some editing.

Ok. Let's start...

You enter the Joomla! framework by making calls to index.php. Joomla! is designed mainly to deliver the results of component files. When you call a page link like index.php?option=com_ the Joomla! framework tries to find and load the file components/com_/.php from whatever the folder you have installed Joomla! into. So if your component is 'com_read' you should have a 'com_read' folder and a file named 'read.php' inside of it. I will call this file the 'base file' and it is in this file where you make the decision whether to use an old flat model (returning the HTML code for the requested page) or to use a Model-View-Controller (MVC) pattern.

This MVC model, walks over two legs: a file and a class. The Joomla! framework will usually look for a given file and if found, tries to register a specific class within this file. If either one is missing the call fails.

You start all the fireworks by including a controller file in your base file. The controller file can be named anything you want, but by convention it is called 'controller.php'. In your base file (.php), the following code is typical:

require_once(JPATH_COMPONENT.DS.'controller.php');
